Is John Beck Really The Man For The Redskins?

It appears that John Beck answered Rex Grossman’s challenge to the starting quarterback job in Washington, and may have either pulled ahead or pulled even.

Beck’s impressive 14-of-17, 140 yards passing performance in leading the Redskins to a 16-3 win against the Indianapolis Colts.  While Beck would throw no touchdowns, he also did not throw any interceptions, but was sacked three times by the Colts.

Beck, 29, was a former second-round pick of the Miami Dolphins out of Brigham Young, and is the apparent front-runner among the Redskins coaching staff—mainly head coach, Mike Shanahan—due to his accuracy and big play potential.

During his four-year career at BYU, Beck would complete 62.4% of his passes for 11,021 yards, and toss 79 touchdowns and 34 interceptions.

Those numbers would lead to Beck being chosen 40th overall, and the fourth quarterback chosen in the 2007 NFL Draft behind, JaMarcus Russell, Brady Quinn and Kevin Kolb.

Once in Miami, Beck would become the third-string quarterback behind Trent Green and Cleo Lemon.  Beck would take over as the Dolphin’s starter in Week 11 against the Philadelphia Eagles and later lead the Dolphins to their lone win in their 1-15 season over Baltimore.

After the Dolphins signed free-agent, Chad Pennington and draft former Michigan quarterback, Chad Henne, Beck would return to being a third-string quarterback in 2008.

For his career, Beck would complete 56.1% of his passes for 559 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions.

Washington Redskins head coach, Mike Shanahan won two Super Bowls in Denver, you have to wonder what he sees in a quarterback that has only played in FIVE NFL games as a starter and has a QB rating of 62.0?

No disrespect to John Beck, but he is no John Elway.  Beck’s body of work—or lack there of—would trouble me if Beck wins the starting job in Washington.

Perhaps Shanahan sees some Elway-like qualities in Beck, we may never know, but he certainly does not have Elway’s rocket arm, or his quality of talent around him in Washington.

Controversy is nothing new for the Redskins, and with the high-profile quarterback circus going on between both Beck and Grossman being far from over, it wouldn’t shock many if the Redskins go in a new direction entirely as neither current quarterback appears to be the solution.
